Air Sealing Your Maryland Home

Air Sealing Your Maryland Home

Do you ever experience these problems in your home?

  • Drafts along floors or walls
  • Unexpectedly high energy bills
  • Icicles on the edge of your roof
  • Cold spots on walls or floors
  • Dry air during winter months
  • Air conditioner runs all the time in summer
  • Heating system runs all the time in winter

Your problem may be air leaks. Almost every home leaks air at some point. The space between floor joists is especially susceptible to leaks. Air travels back and forth to the outside wall where it leaks in and out around the rim joist. These leaks lead to higher energy bills and drafts blowing through your home. Homeview Contractors is the Maryland energy contractor who can solve this problem.

If any of these problems is occurring you are probably experiencing air leakage and infiltration that is robbing your home of heat during the winter and cool air during the summer. The good news is that we can stop the flow through air sealing.

What is air sealing?
Air sealing is the process of measuring the total air loss of a home and using specialized equipment to locate and repair the leaks. This makes the home’s “thermal envelope” as tight and energy efficient as possible.

Many air leaks and drafts are easy to find because they are easy to feel, like those around windows and doors. But holes hidden in attics, basements and crawlspaces are usually bigger problems. Other common leak sources include recessed lights and exhaust fans.

Cracks and gaps in the exterior of your home allow heated or cooled air to escape from your home and outside air to enter. This makes your heating and air conditioning systems work harder, use more energy and cost more to operate to keep your home comfortable. Air leakage or infiltration occurs when outside air enters a house uncontrollably through cracks and openings.

In a typical house air leakage accounts for about one-quarter to one-third of heating and cooling costs. Most homes have the equivalent of a perpetually open window in combined air leaks!

Such big losses offer the best opportunity for big savings. Of all the methods to reduce energy use in a house, air leakage control is one of the most cost effective. According to the Department of Energy, proper air sealing combined with effective insulation can reduce your home’s heating and cooling costs by as much as 30 percent.

Once your home is airtight and free of cracks or leaks your heating and cooling systems don’t have to work as hard and therefore are more efficient. Your home will be more comfortable and your heating and cooling costs will be lower.

A home energy evaluation performed on your home to reveal the problem areas. This includes thermal imaging that allows us to identify and locate hidden leaks and gaps. Homeview’ technicians find and seal all cracks, crevices, and holes in the interior and exterior of your home. We even seal leaks found in recessed lights that allow conditioned air to escape into the attic during the heating season and hot, unconditioned air to infiltrate in from the attic during the cooling season. We also check to make sure combustion appliances (gas- or oil-fired furnace, water heater) are venting properly. The EPA and EnergyStar recommend this on every similar project.
